Like most professions in the healthcare sector, the career prospects for osteopathic manual practitioners are interesting for several reasons:
The regulation of Osteopathy in the province of Ontario is complicated by several factors. The main complication is due to the recognition of the title Osteopathic Physician by The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Osteopathic Physicians are those individuals who have trained in the United States and who hold a medical degree from a college approved by the American Osteopathic Association. In addition to being licensed physicians, they also have osteopathic manual training. In Canada, the Canadian College of Osteopathy provides education in Traditional Osteopathic Manual Practice, the hands-on approach originally founded by A.T. Still.
Although, The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario recognizes Osteopathic Physicians, the manual practice of Osteopathy is not regulated in Ontario. However, the Ontario Association of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners (OAO)—an organization originally founded in 1999 by students and graduates of the CCO—is developing a submission to the Ontario government to have manual Osteopathy become regulated in the province. This process will take a significant amount of planning and time. The OAO is committed to fostering the practice and professional advancement of osteopathy in Ontario. As well, the OAO ensures that their members meet the highest standard of training as set out by the WHO. As a graduate of the CCO, you are eligible to become a member of the OAO.
